Let's compare this to another industry: what would happen if all of a sudden, all airlines around the world would start cancelling or delaying flights at the same time because of technical problems with their airplanes? Give it some time and enough repetitions, and the public would actually begin to fear air travel.

Don't be confused. I am a computer programmer and systems analyst; I have been on this trade for something like 15 years now, and I think that the technological feats that form the Web are amazing.

However, for the general public, the Internet is still problematic. We all have heard histories about online frauds, scams and problems with credit cards. They may or may not be true, but in the ears of the public, they sound alarming.

Now, add to this lingering perception the fact that more often than not, you can't connect, you can't access some websites, your computer hangs, etc. - not to mention viruses and hackers - and that credit card fraud tale of your mother's choice becomes more credible, because even if the surfer doesn't actually suffer a case of fraud, the 'under construction' look and feel of the web makes it so.

It doesn't have to be you, and it might not be your ISP's fault, but the global nature of the web, the fine print found in most contracts and the consequential business mentality that arises from them are not really helping this industry.

The 'I didn't do it' sort of explanation that is a direct consequence of such contracts seems totally insufficient for a lot of people, and this should change because after years of this brave new world the web still can't compete with your local grocer.
