The discovery by Becquerel in 1896 of natural radiation originated the science of nuclear physics or nuclear chemistry, depending on the point of view.

The traditional division of phenomena in physical and chemical is not applicable for the analysis of nuclear dynamics. Thus, phenomena should really be classified in three categories: Physical: in these, neither the mass nor the chemical structure of the intervening elements are altered. Chemical: the mass and chemical compositions are altered, but the magnitude of intervening mass and energy are conserved. Nuclear: neither the mass nor the elements are conserved during these reactions.

In traditional chemical processes, atoms transfer between each other the electrons that occupy their most external orbitals, but their core structures - their nucleii - remain intact. On the other hand, during nuclear reactions, the particles that are actually inside the nucleii are transformed, destroyed or exchanged.

The energy emitted during a nuclear reaction is - by far - more significant than the amounts liberated during ordinary physical or chemical processes: a gram of coal burning liberates approximately 7.000 calories, while the same mass of uranium during a nuclear reaction releases around calories.
