Kulik - Leonid Alekseyevich Kulik (1883-1942) was a geologist born in Estonia and a Soviet citizen. He was a mineralogist specialised in the study of meteors. In 1921 he directed an expedition to investigate the then recent Tunguska event, a peculiar explosion occurred in 1908; he concluded that it was in fact caused by a meteor of some sort. He supplemented his investigation with two more expeditions to the area in Siberia, in 1929 and 1938. He fought during the war between Russia and Japan, the first World War and the Second World War, and after being captured and sent to a German POW camp, died due to the terrible conditions found there. He was also sent to prison during the last years of the Russian monarchy for his revolutionary activities.
