Trephine - Trephine is the traditional name given to drills used in cranial trepanations during the Roman era. As Celsus describes, trephines made out of bronze usually got so hot by friction as trepanation went under way that they often had to be submerged in cold water. Trephines were used in some odd treatments such as 'extracting worms from the head', probably referring to cranial infestation with Taenia multiceps larvae.
