De Medici, Johannes Leo - Johannes Leo de Medici (1485-1554) was the Christian name under which Pope Leo X christened a Muslim prisoner that was delivered to him on the basis of the man's remarkable culture, as noticed by his captors. The prisoner's original name was El Hasan ben Muhammed el-Wazzan-ez-Zayyati and was born on the kingdom of Granada shortly before the Spanish Catholic rules, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella overran it and conquered the Iberian peninsula after eight centuries of continuous war. El Hassan was then expelled along with thousands of Jews and Muslims and during one of his many trips was captured. The Pope set him free on the condition of writing a treaty about the African Continent. What El Hassan – now Leo – wrote became the absolute reference on Africa for centuries to come.
