Hutton, James - James Hutton (1726-1797) was a Scottish geologist and doctor that is widely considered to be the father of geology. His theories became what is now considered as uniformism or the principle of uniformity of physical laws. These views were completely in opposition to catastrophism, which was the most accepted way of interpreting things then without entering in conflict with religious beliefs. He stated for the first time that rocks originate on Earth's hot interior (Plutonism,) a fact that brought heavy critics on him for his apparent agnosticism. His works were later popularised by scientists such as Lyell and Playfair.
