Rohlfs, Friedrich Gerhard - Friedrich Gerhard Rohlfs (1831-1896) was a physician, geographer, writer and explorer born in Germany; he served in the Foreign Legion and while he was exploring the desert in Morocco was seriously wounded after an ambush and left as dead. He then became the first European that travelled Africa from its north to the south, and was an associate of Ritter von Zittel.
