Kircher, Athanasius - Athanasius Kircher, was a German Jesuit monk of the seventeenth century that published a vast number of works on geology and medicine; he was the first to seriously study the Egyptian hieroglyphs and the customs and folklore of China. He suggested that the plague was produced by micro organisms and a series of inventions are attributed to him. Sometimes, his name is written as Athanasius Kirchner.
