Beaufort, Francis - Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857) was an Irish hydrographer at the service of the Royal Navy; he invented a scale to measure the strength of the wind and was the mentor of Captain Robert FitzRoy, who later commanded the H.M.S Beagle.
