Ergosphere - The ergosphere is the region of space around a massive body to which the Kerr metric can be applied. It is defined as the space outside the event horizon of the body – a rotating black hole – where the speed of orbiting particles equals the speed of light. The result of this interaction is the emission of massive amounts of energy at the expense of the singularity itself. A mechanism to take advantage of this has been proposed; it is known as the Penrose process, and could be typical of a civilisation of type II or III, according to Kardashev, in order to obtain energy.
