Karl Theodor - Prince Karl Theodor (1724-1799) was ruler of Bavaria – now part of Germany -, and not a particularly popular one. His image suffered considerably due to his dealings with the rulers of Austria, seen as rivals of Bayern by most Bavarians and by the fact that he strived to suppress dissent and especially, organisations that promoted democracy, such as the Order of Perfectibilism. However, he promoted the arts and sciences in the country in many different ways.
