Petra - A significant archaeological site located in Jordan, Petra was the capital of the ancient Nabatean kingdom. The whole city was carved in the stone walls of a valley. The city began as a settlement in the seventh century BCE and occupied by the Nabateans that made it grow and prosper around the fifth century AD. Petra, being located in a caravan route, benefited greatly from commerce. Changes in caravan routes and seismic activity forced its inhabitants to abandon it. Petra was rediscovered in 1812 by the Swiss explorer Johann Burkhardt. It is today a UNESCO world heritage site.
